Red in Rio

The weather did not cooperate on some of our other days in Rio, leaving us with three tourist stops to fit into one morning: Escadaria Selaron, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Monte Dona Marta. Since tourism usually means a decent amount of walking, I needed an easy outfit with comfortable shoes. Enter: a shirt dress and birks.

Red in Rio via A Lo ProfileI could not be happier that Birkenstock’s made there way back into style. They were my favorite thing to wear for far too long in Junior High and High School. Although at that time I usually chose the suede clog style. I would also wear them far past the point I should have, so they would end up looking brownish instead of tan. Gosh, I was cool.

Red in Rio via A Lo ProfileOur first stop that morning was Escadaria Selaron. This staircase is located in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio and includes tiles from all around the world. It is the work of Chilean painter Selaron, who began working on the staircase in 1990. Unfortunately he was found tragically murdered at the top in 2013. *Fun fact: Snoop Dogg & Pharell shot the video for their song ‘Beautiful’ at the stairs. Watch it here.

When you’re walking up the stairs, you see all the beautiful colors from the tiles donated to the project from all over the world. However, on your way down they look like every day concrete stairs, which I think adds such a cool perspective.Red in Rio via A Lo ProfileAfter Escadaria Selaron, we went to take the cable car up Sugar Loaf Mountain for more breathtaking views of Rio.

Sugarloaf mountin from Rio travel guide via A Lo ProfileThis bucket bag has been a life saver during our travels. It fits everything, including my camera case. I don’t like advertising my camera (except for when I have no choice because I’m using it) so this is the perfect way to carry it around with me.

Finally, we ended our sightseeing filled morning at the peaceful Mirante Dona Marta to take in a few more views of Christ the Redeemer.Mirante Dona Marta lookout, Rio travel guide via A Lo ProfileAn extremely productive day crossing several tourist stops off the list and staying comfortable while doing it.
